Since the start of the pandemic,  work policies have changed.  Flexible work options, work-from-home, and employee benefits that focus on well-being are shaping the way we work and the way we live our lives.
The approach to employee experience during the pandemic has been highly polarized. Some companies have used this time to really invest in and prioritize their employees' well-being and work-life balance. They have provided remote work options, extended benefits, and supported mental health initiatives. These companies recognize that a positive employee experience leads to higher productivity, better engagement, and improved overall business outcomes.
On the other hand, some companies are looking to bring employees back to the office and reduce the benefits that were provided during the pandemic. They may see remote work as a hindrance to collaboration and innovation and believe that being physically present in the workplace is essential for a company's culture and productivity.
In a nutshell, the pandemic has shown us that there are different ways to work and that employees value flexibility and a supportive work environment. However, it's important to consider the needs and preferences of both the employees and the organization. Each company is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to employee experience.
Ultimately, the focus should be on creating a positive and inclusive work environment, whether that means allowing remote work options or fostering collaboration in the office. It's about finding the right balance that works for both the employees and the company's goals.

Last week, Lance and I recorded a great podcast  - we are digging into the impact of AI in HR and WorkTech. It’s true, the use of AI does have the potential to enhance efficiency and improve decision-making processes in an organization.
However, there are concerns about the potential for AI to perpetuate and amplify biases, especially around recruitment. Check out the latest on AI and HR  -   New York City Adopts Final Regulations on Use of AI in Hiring and Promotion, Extends Enforcement Date to July 5, 2023.
It is crucial for organizations to carefully consider the potential impacts of AI on their employees and to address any ethical concerns that may arise.
AI is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and its benefits and limitations can vary depending on how it is used along with the type of data being used. Organizations want to approach AI adoption with caution and carefully evaluate the potential benefits and risks in the context of their specific needs and goals.

It's been hard to miss all the news of tech layoffs over the past few weeks, and companies are using this opportunity to right-size their staff.  While these decisions are understandable, it's still difficult to see companies make such sweeping cuts.

When layoffs occur, organizations can often face a double-edged sword,  there is a lack of productivity from those who are no longer with the organization and the costs associated with rehiring and paying severance packages. This can be particularly costly and damaging in the long term, it takes time to see any financial benefit from the layoffs.

It's clear that there is a reskilling story to be told, and it's time to start telling it more creatively and thoughtfully. Companies must start to invest in reskilling initiatives to better prepare their workforce for the long term. This could mean having conversations around the development of a thoughtful, five-year plan to identify where the company is going and how they can use the people they know won't necessarily be in those positions in five years to get them ready for the next steps.

Telling the story of reskilling effectively is key to helping both employees and employers navigate this complex process. By focusing on story-telling and crafting the right narrative, a successful reskilling plan can be achieved.

When talking about defining moments, it's important to consider how to take the low points and flatten them to create a more positive outcome. This can be applied to all levels of the shareholder, employee, and customer experience.

Reskilling has become an increasingly popular concept in the corporate world, allowing organizations to pivot and avoid the 'fire-rehire' cycle. However, it is also important to think about how to effectively sell these changes to shareholders, as well as make sure that the necessary support is in place for the affected employees.

n December 2022, Southwest Airlines' antiquated scheduling software caused a historical shutdown in the airline industry. Known for their excellent customer service and experience, that reputation was broken during the recent shutdown.
This incident highlights the importance of investing in and maintaining modern, up-to-date and reliable technology to ensure a smooth customer experience and a positive work experience for employees.
Scheduling solutions and platforms have taken “self-service” to the extreme. And, when work systems fail, it has a ripple effect on the entire organization.
The key is to ensure that the decision-makers in the organization understand the potential of scheduling software as well as other technology platforms and how they can support the larger goals of the organization and create an exceptional employee experience.
If leaders of Southwest put themselves in employees' shoes and thought about how this recent scheduling nightmare impacted their day-to-day work experience, changes….although difficult and taxing on workflow, would occur. Southwest’s recent dilemma is a reminder that companies should always strive to consider the employee experience in all aspects of their operations, including the systems and technology they use, to ensure a positive experience for consumers and employees.
Lance and I will break it all down in this week’s Work Leader Weekly Podcast….listen up!

With all the labor shortages, you can’t afford to make recruitment mistakes in 2023. We tell you what to look out for, where things might already be going wrong, and how to start your 2023 recruitment efforts on the right track.

We discuss why you should have a holistic experience vision, why you should map out the recruitment experience from the candidate’s point of view, and why you should stop caring about your Glassdoor score.

“The number one candidate doesn't know and doesn't care. They don't even have the context for understanding that they are in a database with hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people” - Bret Starr

“Chances are all the people that you need are the ones you never got back to.” - Bret Starr

What we discussed
(01:38) Trends in employee experience in 2023
(11:50) How the pandemic killed employer brands
(12:30) Do you know your employer brand?
(17:16) Recruitment marketing vs. employer brand advertising
(20:55) Your glassdoor score is a lie
(22:07) Your competitors will outperform you in recruitment marketing
(26:59 Breaking the recruitment script
(39:44) Commissions on job postings
(41:20) Recruitment mistakes you can’t afford to make
(48:56)  Mapping the recruitment experience

4 Key Takeaways
When creating an employer brand, you shouldn’t focus on the employer experience you want to promote. You should focus on what kind of experience you want to create. The advertising you put out about your employer brand has to be in alignment with the actual employee experience.
If you have a greater employee experience than your competitor, but low employer brand recognition - your competitor’s recruitment marketing campaign will outperform yours.
Your number 1 candidate doesn’t care about the volume of candidates you have to sift through. If you ghost them, all they’ll think of you as is the company they thought they were going to work at but never heard back from.
Map the entire recruitment experience from your candidate’s point of view and take it a moment to reflect on how the experience affects your employer brand long-term.

In layoff cycles, HR is usually in a stressful and unwinnable position. We talk about how to compassionately handle the tech layoff situation whether or not your company is terminating staff. We also discuss Elon Musk, the HR staff shortage, and how to avoid the biggest mistake HR makes when laying off staff.

“The toughest thing is getting out of  compliance mode and more into human mode for this moment” - Lance Haun

What we discussed
(00:45) New Orleans Thanksgiving tradition
(04:51) The hardest 3 years of HR’s lives
(05:44) What to tell staff about layoff scares
(13:35) Tech layoffs: is HR to blame?
(20:11) Life’s too short to be in HR?
(24:47) Biggest mistake when laying off staff
3 Key Takeaways
If your organization is doing well in this market downturn, remember to proactively reassure your teams.
Layoffs in the tech sector mean that some talent may be migrating to other sectors. This can be a huge opportunity for companies outside tech to hire top talent.
If you have to lay someone off because of the economic situation, make sure to clarify that it is not their fault. People want clarity and information about their situation - demonstrate that you are there to answer their questions and support them.
